Send the link only to people who follow you
Follow to unlock turns giving something away into a reason to follow you. The commenter is asked to follow first, and the link goes out once Instagram confirms they have — checked properly, inside Instagram’s rules.
How follow to unlock works

They comment your keyword
Instead of the link, their DM asks them to follow you and reply. The public reply under their comment still posts, so the thread shows they were answered.

They follow you, then reply
Any reply counts. They don't have to type a particular word, so "done", "followed!" and a thumbs-up all work.

Instagram confirms the follow
Their reply is what lets us ask Instagram whether they follow you. It is Instagram's own answer, not a guess.

The link arrives
Your message and link go out in the same thread, straight away. The request is marked as delivered in your activity log.

The follow request is a message you write. The first one above is the suggested default.
The cases worth knowing about
What if they reply without following?
They get your reminder message instead of the link — at most 2 of them, so nobody is nagged. Their next reply is still checked, and the link goes the moment Instagram confirms they follow.
What if they never reply?
Nothing more is sent. The request stays open for 7 days, then lapses. The activity log shows who hasn't replied yet.
Why do they have to reply at all?
Instagram only tells a business whether someone follows it after that person has messaged the business. The reply is what makes the check possible — there's no way around it that stays inside Instagram's rules.
What about Instagram's 24-hour messaging window?
Instagram only lets a business message someone within 24 hours of their last message, and each reply restarts that clock — so a reply always leaves room to send the link. If a send is ever refused because the window closed, the request stays open, and their next reply completes it.
Can I check someone by hand?
Yes. The activity log shows each person's follow status, and a check-now button asks Instagram again for anyone who has replied.
When to use it, and when not to
Follow to unlock suits a giveaway people genuinely want — a guide, a template, a discount code, early access to a launch. The value of the thing is what makes the extra step feel fair.
Leave it off when speed matters more than the follow: a shopper asking the price of something in a reel wants the product page, not a request. Every extra step loses some people, and on a sales comment those are the ones you wanted most.
